If you become occupationally disabled

If you become occupationally disabled, you can continue to build up pension as usual. Depending on the percentage of your occupational disability, Bpf Koopvaardij will pay part of your pension contribution subject to conditions. This is called non-contributory membership. Bpf Koopvaardij also has a WGA shortfall scheme for all pension scheme members. This is a possible financial supplement if you receive a WGA follow-up benefit from the Dutch Employee Insurance Agency (UWV).

Non-contributory membership in the case of occupational disability: the conditions

For non-contributory membership, it is important that you meet the following conditions:

  • your employment has been terminated or you are working fewer hours because of your occupational disability;
  • you are entitled to a Dutch WIA or WAO benefit;
  • you were a member of our pension scheme when you became sick;
  • you provide Bpf Koopvaardij with all information needed for non-contributory membership.

We receive your details from the UWV

If you become occupationally disabled and are entitled to a Dutch WIA or WAO benefit, we will automatically receive your occupational disability details from the UWV. You will then receive a letter from us with information about non-contributory membership at Bpf Koopvaardij.

What is the extent of your non-contributory membership?

In the case of a WIA benefit

The percentages of your non-contributory membership on the basis of the Dutch Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act (WIA) are indicated below.

Did you become occupationally disabled before 2014?

In 2014, various pension funds and insurers concluded an agreement on income protection in the event of incapacity for work. As a result, the conditions for eligibility for non-contributory membership have been changed. The relevant arrangements have applied since 2014.

If you became occupationally disabled before 2014, for example, you still need to have participated continuously in our pension scheme until the first day you received disability benefit (WAO) or benefit under the terms of the Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act (WIA) or until the end of your first year of receiving WAO benefit. For this group too, however, an application for non-contributory membership will be handled more flexibly if it is submitted after the one-year application period.
