Mandatory membership

For a number of employees, membership of the Bpf Koopvaardij pension scheme is mandatory. You must register these employees with us. The list below tells you which employees are involved.

You must register these employees with us

Seafarers aged 18 and over who sail under the Dutch flag and live in:

  • the Kingdom of the Netherlands: the continental Netherlands, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Bonaire, Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten;
  • an EU Member State;
  • a country belonging to the European Economic Area (EEA), with the exception of Switzerland; or
  • certain ‘Treaty Countries’ with which the Netherlands has concluded a social security and employee insurance agreement, with the exception of the United States of America.

* This means that you do not register with us employees who are younger than 18 years, interns/trainees, shore personnel and seafarers on board seagoing vessels that fly a foreign flag. However, seafarers under a foreign flag can apply for voluntary membership of Bpf Koopvaardij.

Treaty Countries

These are the Treaty Countries with an agreement relating to both national insurance and employee insurance schemes, i.e. Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cape Verde, Morocco, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Kingdom. If an employee lives in a Treaty Country, then you must register him/her with us.
