The Dutch Future Pensions Act took effect on 1 July 2023. All pension funds must have switched to the new pension system by 1 January 2028 at the latest. The timeline shows the steps we are taking to achieve this. In this way, you will stay informed of developments.
2022 - early 2023
Before the law was adopted, the social partners were already in intensive consultation. They thus made the temporary choice for a solidarity scheme. This is a pension scheme in which we absorb windfalls and setbacks together. But it is also a scheme in which we share the risks together and pensions are more stable. The social partners have also expressed a preference to convert all accrued pensions to pensions according to the new rules. This is the so-called 'conversion'.
The Dutch Future Pensions Act was passed in the House of Representatives and then the Senate.
1 July 2023
The new law took effect from 1 July 2023. Pension funds have until 1 January 2028 to transfer to the new pension rules. Social partners have agreed that the new Bpf Koopvaardij scheme will come into force on 1 January 2026.
2023 - 2024
Employers and employees in the merchant navy are making specific agreements on the new scheme and the transition. These will be presented soon. Then Bpf Koopvaardij assesses whether the agreements are explainable and enforceable. The fund also checks whether the arrangements made are balanced for all members: young and old.
In 2024, Bpf Koopvaardij will also investigate what risks members are willing to take with investments. The results of this research will be taken into account in the fund's further decision-making.
2024 - 2025
Bpf Koopvaardij will be preparing the transition to the new scheme.
Before the new scheme comes into effect, you will be notified on what your pension was before the transition and what your pension will be after the transition.
1 January 2026
Bpf Koopvaardij will implement the new scheme on 1 January 2026.
