I want to retire later

Not everyone retires as soon as they reach state pension age. You can choose to postpone the start of your pension with Bpf Koopvaardij. For example, because you want to continue working, your partner is still working, you do not yet need your pension, or because you want to receive a higher pension later. Are you postponing your pension? In that case, you will receive your pension over a shorter period. As a result, your monthly pension may be higher. At the same time, this decision will have implications for your income and that of your partner.

What does retiring later mean?

Are you planning to postpone your retirement? In that case:

  • you will receive your state pension from your state pension age;
  • you opt to start your pension later than your state pension age;
  • you will receive your pension over a shorter period;
  • your monthly pension may increase;
  • you can postpone your pension until 5 years after your state pension age at the latest.

Would retiring later suit me?

Your situation is personal. So are your choices. Consider, for example, the following issues:

  • Would you prefer to start receiving your pension when you reach state pension age or to receive a higher pension later on?
  • Would you like to carry on working for longer? And is this also possible with your employer? Your employment contract often ends when you reach state pension age. Will you carry on working? In that case, you should make new arrangements with your employer.
  • What will your income be if you carry on working? What will your income be if you stop working?
  • Will you need your pension from Bpf Koopvaardij when you reach state pension age?
  • Do you have a partner? What does a postponement mean for your partner? What happens if you pass away before your pension commences?

By answering these questions, you’ll get a better idea of what retiring later means for you.

What will change if I retire later?

Your income

One advantage of retiring later is that your monthly pension may be higher. After all, you will be receiving your pension for fewer years.

  • You will receive the state pension from your state pension age.
  • Your occupational retirement pension will start later. You will therefore only start receiving your pension from Bpf Koopvaardij from your chosen retirement date.

Pension build-up with Bpf Koopvaardij ceases as soon as you reach state pension age, even if you continue to work afterwards. It is therefore important to consider not only a higher pension later on, but also your income during the period between reaching state pension age and the date your occupational retirement pension starts.

Your expenditure

Retiring later can result in a higher monthly pension. That is one of the advantages of a postponement. On the other hand, you will receive your pension later. You must therefore be able to make ends meet during the period between reaching state pension age and the date on which your occupational retirement pension starts. So consider which option best suits your situation: receiving pension earlier or waiting longer for a higher pension. You should also check whether the higher pension you’ll receive after the postponement period will be in line with the expenditure you expect to have at that time.

Tax and allowances

Will you continue to work whilst postponing your pension? In that case, your income may be different from what it would be if you were to retire straight away. This may affect the tax you pay and any allowances you receive. You should therefore consider your overall financial situation and not just the level of your pension. You can find more information on the website of the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Remember! Your partner’s income

Are you postponing your pension? As soon as you reach state pension age, your pension build-up will stop. Insurance cover for a partner’s pension and an orphan’s pension will also cease. You will subsequently still be temporarily entitled to run-off cover. If you continue to work after reaching state pension age, this run-off cover will cease.

You can voluntarily continue your partner’s and orphan’s pension insurance. That will extend your risk cover. However, the partner’s pension that you accrued before 1 January 2026 will be retained for your partner.

What do I arrange myself?

  1. Check your situation in the pension planner in My Koopvaardij. Compare retiring later with other pension options.

  2. Calculate your income now and in the future.

  3. You may wish to discuss with your employer whether it is possible to continue working for longer.

  4. Apply for your pension as soon as you wish it to commence.

  5. Vraag uw pensioen aan zodra u het wilt laten ingaan.

How do I apply for a pension?

You apply for your pension yourself. You must do this in My Koopvaardij no later than 2 months before you wish your pension to commence. Read the step-by-step guide to applying for a pension beforehand. In this guide, we explain how to apply for your pension.

Remember: once your pension commences, your choices are final. You will therefore no longer be able to change these choices.

Do you have a partner? If so, bear in mind that he or she will also need to sign your pension application (digitally or otherwise).

What happens if I do nothing?

What happens if you do not claim your pension on or before your state pension age? In that case, your pension will be automatically postponed. You can still apply for your pension at a later date, up to a maximum of 5 years after reaching state pension age.

Do you have a partner and/or children, and are you postponing your pension? In that case, check carefully what this means for the partner’s and orphan’s pension. In some situations, this cover ceases during the postponement period. You may choose to continue your cover voluntarily. So don’t just consider what a postponement means for you, but also for your partner and children.
